The Art of Japa Meditation
3 Tuesday Nights in March :: March 15th, 22nd + 29th
7-8:15PM @ INVERSION YOGA
In this 3-week course, we will be learning the art of Japa meditation. Why Japa? Using Japa as meditation has the potential to supercharge your practice and intentions with the energy of mantra.
So, What is Japa Meditation?
In Sanskrit, Japa means “to repeat” prayers or mantras ~ so a Japa meditation practice is a meditative repetition of reciting a mantra or even the divine names of gods or goddesses (known as deities). The mantra or god/goddess is chosen based on the qualities you are wishing to invoke. Oftentimes, a Japa meditation practice will be accompanied by a mala ~ prayer beads~ although you do not need a mala to perform a Japa practice.
In each session, we will learn about the energy of a particular goddess, practice breathwork to bring us inward into a calm state and then practice a Japa round using a mantra related to the goddess we learned about. Durga, Kali and Tara. Deities are part of our consciousness that already live within each of our hearts, and when we work with the energy of a particular god or goddess we are able to invoke the energy, qualities and influence of that deity into the workings of our lives.
Night 1: Introduction to Japa Meditation / Durga
We will learn about how to practice Japa meditation using mantra, and how to use a mala if you have one. On this first evening, we will be working with the energy of the goddess Durga. She is known as the Goddess of strength and yet she brings compassion, peace, calm, and order to the chaos, destruction, and conflict in any situation. Durga can give clarity and positive direction in life. She is the intelligent energy of consciousness and she has the power to dispel self-doubt and confusion.
Night 2: Kali
On our second evening, we will be working with the energy of Goddess Kali, invoking the quality of fearlessness. The energy of Kali helps us to transcend imbalances and disturbances of the mind, as well as helping us to destroy our ego.
Night 3: Tara
On our final evening we will be working with the energy of the Goddess Tara. She is known as the Goddess of the Earth. We will be invoking compassion as well as connecting with the energy of the Earth.
